Press Release (ePRNews.com) - Tampa, Florida - Mar 16, 2017 - According to the National Sleep Foundation, 45 percent of Americans reported that they received poor or insufficient sleep that affected their daily routines. In fact, about 40 million Americans are reported to suffer from chronic sleep disorders. March is National Sleep Awareness Month, and it is important to look at sleep patterns and how they impact everyday lives.
Getting the right amount of sleep is important to maintain overall health and allow the brain to function properly. The average adult needs at least eight hours of sleep a night to avoid negatively impacting their body. However, in a recent study, 29 percent of adults recorded getting six hours or less sleep a night on average. Those among this 29 percent may be putting themselves at a higher risk for diseases like hypertension, diabetes, obesity, depression, heart attack, or even a stroke.

Chronic sleep disorders and insufficient sleep not only affect the body but can also lead to drowsy driving, reduced efficiency in the workplace and impact on personal relationships due to emotional changes.

Some common reasons people don’t get enough sleep include staying up too late, being distracted by electronics, developing sleep disorders, and having trouble staying asleep.
For National Sleep Awareness Month, Florida E.N.T. & Allergy is providing some tips to help get a better night’s rest:
1. Try to go to sleep and get up at the same time every day
2. Get as much natural sunlight as possible
3. Move vigorously during the day — don’t sit for more than an hour
4. Limit caffeine, nicotine, alcohol and big meals at night
5. Take time for relaxing activities before sleep
6. Create a calm and restful sleep environment
