Press Release (ePRNews.com) - LONDON - Oct 04, 2016 - EDRS – SpaceDataHighway is the most advanced high-performance alternative for space data transfer, providing data transmission in broadband quality in almost real time. A system of two geostationary satellites is used to relay information between Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites, spacecrafts or airbornes and fixed ground stations. EDRS will enable satellites to immediately transfer data to the ground instead of waiting for up to hours before flying over a fixed ground station*.
The SpaceDataHighway is a public–private partnership between ESA and Airbus Defence and Space. The DLR German Aerospace Center funded the development of the cutting-edge laser technology that forms the backbone of the system. The first node, EDRS-A, was launched on 29 January 2016 as a hosted payload on the Eutelsat-9B satellite. The second, the dedicated EDRS-C satellite, will be launched in 2017**.
“SpaceDataHighway is no longer science fiction. It will revolutionise satellite communications, and help to keep the European space industry at the forefront of technology and innovative services,” said Evert Dudok, Head of the Communications, Intelligence & Security (CIS) business line at Airbus Defence and Space*.
SMi Group are delighted to announce Hughes Boulnois, Head of EDRS, Airbus Defence and Space will be presenting at Global MilSatCom 2016 this December in London on “SpaceDataHighway : Benefit of Laser Communications for aircrafts and EO satellites.” Presentation highlights include: Status of EDRS-A, 1st satellite of the operational data-relay system using laser communication; Benefit of very high-data rate, low latency and secured data transfer service: EDRS-D : focus on Asia Pac and enhanced defence applications (aircraft, EW-active environment, new crypto capabilities…)
