Fabulous Japonesque sterling silver and mixed metal tea caddy. Made by Gorham in Providence in 1884. Dome body with short neck. Flat cover with curved sides.
Mixed metal bird (crane), insects (spider and butterfly), and plants (cattails and chrysanthemums) in granulated soil applied to honeycomb ground. Another highlight is the web, which the spider sits on. Hallmark includes no. B2 and date letter.
Condition: Deep period patina and fine definition. Spider is missing half a leg – though it still looks as if it could crawl around to the other side.
Dimensions: H 4 3/4 x D 3 1/2 in. Weight: 9 troy ounces.
