Artist debuts sculpture made of dog hair at Memphis Zoo

Press Release (ePRNews.com) - MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Mar 02, 2018 - American artist Mateo Blanco is bringing his work to the Memphis Zoo—and it’s pretty wild.

Blanco will be one of the central parts of an exhibit with more than 160 artifacts and oddities from Ripley’s Believe It or Not! from March 3 to July 8. Blanco’s work—a 3-D replica of a FedEx truck made completely of dog hair and glue—has never been seen before.

“I see art in everything, from the truck delivering packages to your home to the dog that might chase it,” Blanco said. “From saving the strands of hair to carefully crafting the details of the truck, this piece was a labor of love. I believe the world has never seen anything like it.”

Believe it or not, this isn’t the first time Blanco has used dog hair as his medium. Blanco previously used dog hair to create portraits of John Lennon, Michael Jackson and Jimi Hendrix. This is the first time, however, that Blanco has created a sculpture with the hair.

The work includes incredible detail, from the tires and windshield wipers to replica shipping aaaqn boxes all done in hair. And no need to worry—Blanco reuses the hair from happily groomed dogs that would normally be swept up and thrown away. The hair used in the sculpture comes from five dogs, including a French poodle, a golden retriever and a husky.

Blanco is known for creating captivating portraits of celebrities and icons using unusual materials, such as peanuts, coffee beans and sugar.

Born in Miami, the artist now calls Orlando home. His work has been featured throughout the U.S. and around the world.
