10 Books A Home (10BH) is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to cultivate the intrinsic learning motivations (ILMs) of preschoolers. 10BH works with families living in high poverty communities where rates of poverty and school failure are higher than all other school communities in the US. We aim for all children served to perform above grade level. According to student report cards we collect, children who graduate our Child-Parent Home Tutoring Program perform at or above grade level. 10BH has innovated the first home tutoring model in the U.S. to cultivate the ILMs of a preschool child while including the parent and family. Our approach has resulted in high poverty preschoolers entering kindergarten at or above grade level in school systems where for decades upwards of 80% students are low-income and struggle academically. 10BH also innovates on the standard K-12 tutoring intervention model, which targets “below grade level” students with tutoring lessons designed to help them “catch up” to grade level. This approach seeks for low-income students to be at grade level (aka, proficient). By contrast, 10BH serves Pre-K Learners in order to “prevent” them from being behind when they enter kindergarten, and at the same time aims for its Learners to be “above grade level” in grade school. The reality is that helping students in low-income school systems “catch up to grade level” requires massive resources, and in a real sense is a misallocation of resources. 10BH believes performing at grade level in low-income school systems falls short of what it takes to thrive in a growing and interconnected global economy. A new standard for serving low-income communities is needed, one which aims to position children to be above grade level from the outset of their K-12 journey. 10BH is already painting a picture of how this should look and has positioned itself to continue being the organization that leads the way into a brighter and bolder future.
