The American Widow Project is a non-profit organization dedicated to reaching out and helping heal a new generation of widows particularly of Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) and Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) military personnel, as well as non-combat related. The organization was started in 2007 by Taryn Davis after the loss of her husband, 22 year old CPL Michael Davis who was killed in action in Iraq on May 21, 2007. Finding herself a widow at the age of 22 she discovered that there were few resources to help young widows of the War on Terror. Following her grief and confusion, four months later she began work on what is now a unique nationally based non-profit organization that helps this generation of war widows. Since then, she and a core group of widows have reached out and helped heal those who suddenly find themselves part of a unique sisterhood – those who have lost their spouses as a result of war. The AWP creates a support system for a newer, younger generation of war widows in addition to the landscape of other services needed by the families impacted by the loss of their family member.
