"Curim Sickness Belong Eye" – Eye-Opening Memoir by Eye Surgeon Looks at His Career

Press Release (ePRNews.com) - CAMBERWELL, Australia - Feb 16, 2016 - “We are proud to announce the release of this remarkable memoir, telling the life story of a doctor who has truly made a difference in the world. His accomplishments are to be applauded,” said Robert Fletcher, CEO of Strategic Book Publishing and Rights Agency.

This amazing book follows the prize-winning video documentary “Curim Sickness Belong Eye,” conveying the story of retired eye surgeon Dick Galbraith. This Australian doctor spent a good part of his career travelling the Pacific to treat islanders, who otherwise would not have had access to health care. Phillipe de Montignie, producer of the documentary, allowed the documentary’s details to be included in the book so readers can download it from the Internet.

The book Curim Sickness Belong Eye describes the important influences that played a part in Dr. Galbraith’s surgical career. He was head of the Eye Clinic at the Royal Melbourne Hospital for 22 years, and for 20 years led an annual eye team to the Solomon Islands and other islands in the Pacific, where he and his team performed sophisticated eye surgery.  He describes the humour, joy, and pathos he found in his work and what it meant to help those in need.

Dr. Galbraith said, “I spent three or four weeks in the Solomons every year for almost two decades, providing routine outpatient eye clinics, and performing approximately 130 eye operations each year on the islanders. At the request of the government of Vanuatu, I trained a talented male operating room nurse to perform cataract surgery and simple operations. For about a decade he was the only eye surgeon in Vanuatu and was successful in this role.” He added, “I wrote a textbook Basic Eye Surgery (published by Churchill Livingstone) that gave general surgeons the confidence to tackle eye surgery, especially eye trauma, when no eye surgeon was available.”

After retirement, the doctor developed a five-day basic ophthalmology course that has been taught to local doctors and nurses in the Pacific, as well as in Australian rural areas. Because of his efforts, he said, “Today, most Pacific populations have access to competent eye surgeons.”
