Press Release (ePRNews.com) - DURHAM, NC - Mar 21, 2017 - Duda|Paine Architects, an international design-focused architectural firm, was selected by RTI International, an independent nonprofit research institute dedicated to improving the human condition by turning knowledge into practice, to design its newest and largest building on the Research Triangle Park campus.
The six-story office building, the largest on the campus, features a variety of collaboration spaces for colleagues, visitors and business and university research partners including a collaboration center, a new cafeteria with outdoor garden seating and a 300-person multipurpose space. The ground and second floor levels are the most public and allow for impromptu encounters among colleagues and visitors. Second floor collaboration and meeting spaces are open to everyone on campus. The heritage center highlights the institution’s history and achievements. A terrace overlooking RTI’s softball field and the landscape beyond encourages a connection to the outdoors for occupants. An adjacent, four-story parking structure provides approximately 650 spaces. The new building offers many amenities for staff and visitors while serving as a central gathering place for events and collaboration at RTI.
“The building creates a new center of gravity on RTI’s campus. The design’s juxtaposition of transparent and terracotta forms reflects the duality of technology and humanity that is the essence of RTI’s approach to science and research.”
“The design and function of this new building promises to redefine how RTI approaches teamwork,” said Wayne Holden, RTI president and CEO. “Staff members will be invited to interact in creative ways with colleagues, visitors, and partners in this incredible new space. We’re very excited about the collaboration opportunities it will bring.”
“The building creates a new center of gravity on RTI’s campus,” said Sanjeev Patel, Principal and Design Director at Duda|Paine Architects. “The design’s juxtaposition of transparent and terracotta forms reflects the duality of technology and humanity that is the essence of RTI’s approach to science and research.”
