Fall is in full swing and winter is quickly approaching. As the boating season ends, it is time to begin preparation for the colder months ahead. Extended periods of inactivity can actually speed up wear and tear on a boat. Common threats like rust and moisture are ever present and can cause a great amount of damage to the inside and outside of the vessel if left unchecked.

By taking the steps to get your boat ready for winter, you will help keep it in the best shape possible and will be grateful you did so when you take it out of storage again! Here are a few tips to prepare your boat for winter:

  • Clean your Boat. By cleaning your boat from top to bottom, inside and out, prior to tucking her away for the winter, you will be able to reduce the work necessary when boating season rolls around again. If there are any repairs that need to be made, do so now to avoid dealing with a bigger problem down the line.
  • Don’t let moisture win. Remove any standing water and be sure after cleaning (step 1) that your boat is as dry as possible to prevent mold and mildew from growing. Don’t forget to check drawers, closets, lockers, and other storage areas! To maintain proper humidity levels both while in storage and out, use a portable boat dehumidifier to eradicate excess moisture.
  • Reduce and Remove Clutter. Anything that can come out of the boat should. Life jackets, ropes, and other gear should be stored indoors and off your boat to prevent damage.
  • Cover up. The best option for your boat it to store it in an enclosed, climate-controlled facility. For many this may not be practical, so be sure to invest in a good cover for your boat or consider having your boat professionally shrink-wrapped.

Winter can be especially hard on your boat,” said Matt Henson, Vice President of Business Development for Eva-Dry. ” To prevent your boat from damages caused by excess moisture, it is vital to take precautions including using a dehumidifier on your vessel.

Eva-Dry dehumidifiers work with a technologically-advanced silica gel which absorbs moisture. Silica gel has an attraction for moisture. Most silica gel can absorb up to 40% of its weight in water, and it can be easily recharged with heat. All Eva-Dry dehumidifiers are safe to use on your boat, at home, in your car, gun safe, or anywhere you want to protect against increased humidity levels.

Winterizing your boat involves much more than just the tips above. It’s is a very specific process and if done correctly, your boat will be ready when boating season comes around next year. Be sure to always check the winter preparation sections of your boat owner’s manual for further instructions and tips.
