Financial Education Benefits Center Advises Extra Diligence During This Year's Flu Season

Press Release ( - San Ramon, Calif. - Jan 31, 2018 - Flu season is in full swing and it’s hitting especially hard this year. States across the country are reporting high flu activity, rivaling the high 2014-2015 levels. Flu shots can help protect against some strains of the virus, but others can still appear and wreak some havoc. Financial Education Benefits Center, a member benefits company that provides a variety of services and discounts covering health and lifestyle wellness, encourages members to stay vigilant in watching for symptoms and to act quickly if symptoms turn into a positive diagnosis. FEBC will soon roll out health and wellness benefits to make accessing doctors and dealing with the healthcare system easier.

The flu, like any virus, can mutate and change over time. The flu shot many people get each year protects against the strains scientists predict will be most likely to emerge, but it is not a guarantee. This year, as in the 2014-2015 flu season, the dominant strain is H3N2, which can be the most severe. While influenza has affected millions of Americans annually since 2010, the vast majority of flu patients fully recover.

“Getting the flu, or watching a family member with the flu, can feel like the worst thing in the world,” said Jennifer Martinez, Manager at FEBC. “It’s important to stay positive and get help if you think you see flu symptoms, especially if you notice a lot of people around you getting sick.”

The flu thrives in high-population settings where the virus can be passed along on shared or public surfaces, like schools, care facilities, and public transit stations. In fact, the flu saw a resurgence at the beginning of this year, which is unusual in the lifecycle of the virus, and experts are speculating that it coincided with children’s return to school. Children and the elderly are most at risk, but there are precautions everyone can take to prevent or prepare for the flu.

First, it’s not too late to get a flu shot. Because flu shots merely reduce the risk of getting the flu and do not guarantee prevention, preventative habits are highly recommended. Since the virus is spread through touch, especially touching the mouth, nose, and eyes, washing hands after touching public or shared surfaces is essential for prevention. For those inclined, it might be a good idea to have hand sanitizer readily available.

FEBC urges anyone to take action if they think they have the flu. FEBC members will soon be able to speak to a medical professional on the phone at any time to discuss treatment or get advice on when to see their primary care physician. Or if they need help with their care or medical bills after seeing their doctor, they will have access to a health advocate who can even work to negotiate payments.

“We don’t want to see anyone suffering from the flu,” said Martinez. “That’s why we offer benefits that can help our members if they do get sick. We want to support our members to live a healthy and full life and we believe our upcoming benefits do just that.”
