Fort McMurray Move Outs Far From Ordinary For Residents and Movers

Press Release (ePRNews.com) - FORT MCMURRAY, Alberta - May 23, 2016 - After fires, floods and other disasters, there is not only a grieving period for the residents, but there is also a very stress filled process of assessing damage and recovering possessions. This can be made even more difficult due to hazards that may prevent homeowners, residents and businesses from gaining access to their units in order to retrieve items themselves.

Canadian Relocation Specialists of Edmonton and Vancouver have had experience in this area of major multi unit post disaster recover for clients. They have a guide book that addresses the risks and steps to take for those who have fallen victim to these types of disasters. Never one on the scope of the Fort McMurray fires but the concerns will be the same on a per individual property basis. This book is being made available, free of charge to the residents and business owners of Fort McMurray in addition to moving and relocation companies, insurance companies and brokers and others who will be assisting the victims of the Fort McMurray fires. The free book will be available in an e-book format to those whom request the free copy.

Although the community as a whole may be reopened as early as June 01, 2016, many residents may be returning to homes and businesses that have suffered damage from the fires, smoke and water. In these circumstances they may have other issues that prevent them from actually entering the structures.

These safety concerns can include but are not limited to exposed asbestos in walls and ceilings, mould and other airborne spores that can be very hazardous, unsecure drywall on walls and ceilings, pooling water both on floors and in walls etc. Electricity and other utilities may not be connected due to risks of the water damage and other damage that may not be clearly visible, backed up sewage contaminating homes and business, and other risks that are not commonly considered by those anxious to return home.

These and other risks can cause a very stressful and anxious situation to become even more frustrating by those whom have been evacuated for some time and just want to get into their properties in order to assess damage and recover personal items. Although most residents are going to return home and have to deal with smoke damage and other smaller issues, some are returning to see the property completely destroyed while others will return to find that they can not actually enter the property even if it may look safe from the outside. This will cause a great deal of stress and anger if they do not understand the reasons behind the DO NOT ENTER order.

There may be the need for personal protection equipment such as Tyvek suits, hard hats, steel toes, safety helmets, respirators etc. In these circumstances the residents may have to hire movers to be their eyes inside and pack up what can be recovered and remove these items on their behalf. It is essential that they hire the right movers for the job. Most moving companies and staff will not have the experience and the understanding of what is required for these situations. As a result they will be refused entry or they will be disorganized and not know hoe to handle the situation in a safe, efficient and effective manner. This will lead to items not being recovered that could have been, extensively more time being taken and billed than should be, lack of communication and clarification with the resident to clearly explain the process and how it is going to progress. This again, compounds an already stressful and expensive situation for everyone.

Canadian Relocation Specialists understands the process and this not only helps to make the situation more efficient and less costly for homeowners, residents, insurance companies and other invested parties but also helps to ensure constant communication is kept all of the way through the process. The teams take a journal of the interior through video and extensive photos which are reviewed with the resident in order to clarify and maximize the recovery of the most items possible. This same process will be shared with any other moving company involved with the Fort McMurray victims, the victims themselves and others invested parties to ensure we all work together for the best possible results under the circumstances.

Canadian Relocation Specialists will be also announcing free workshops for those interested in Edmonton and Fort McMurray addressing these issues and the process for hazardous relocation services. The workshop dates and times will be announced between June 02 and June 4th and will take place the second week in June. Canadian Relocation Specialists wants to ensure everyone has the right tools and understanding of the process to help those in need with the safety and well being of EVERYONE as a first priority.

“I have seen movers show up at disaster sites and be refused entry for reasons randging from not being cleanly shaven and therefor the respirators will not seal correctly, not having the Tyvek coverallys or safety glasses and other things that are not a normal part of the moving industry requirements. This causes major delays for the movers and the customers which in turn also extends the time which items are getting further damage from water, mould and other exposures etc. As a result it may seem like a small issue but it can be a costly delay for the homeowners, residents, business owners and insurance companies overall. not to mention the additional stress and anxiety to the individuals. It is essential that everyone is working in the most efficient manner in order to reduce the time and cost to everyone involved” states James Cousineau of Canadian Relocation Specialists and Kary Movers Ltd’ s special services departments.
