How to Prepare an RV for a Winter Trip

How to Prepare an RV for a Winter Trip

Press Release (ePRNews.com) - Tampa, FL - Dec 16, 2016 - Tis’ the season for winter getaways for many RV owners. Winter is the perfect time to enjoy the wonderland scenery and partake in other outdoor cold weather activities like skiing, snowboarding, snowmobiling, and so much more.

Before heading out onto the road, it is crucial to get an RV ready to face the icy elements. Here are a few tips to prepare an RV:

  • If traveling to locations experiencing extremely low temperatures, mainly below freezing, it is imperative to the RV’s water system. The last thing one needs dampening a trip is a frozen water heater tank or plumbing lines. Be sure the water system is winterized. To do this properly, read the owner’s manuals for systematic guidelines for winterizing the water system.
  • After winterizing the RV to avoid the water system from freezing, consider how the bathroom will be used. A great tip is to take 1-gallon jugs filled with water to use in the toilet. If the holding tanks are not heated, put some RV antifreeze in the holding tanks to prevent the contents from freezing. Use the water for washing up and for other hygiene needs. As always, consult the owner manual for exact procedures.
  • Check the RV’s tires. Before hitting the road, be sure to have a routine tire inspection to ensure the tires are ready for the roads. Throughout the trip, it is important to check the air pressure in each tire, inflate tires to the recommended PSI, and inspect the tires for cracks and wear.
  • Be sure to cover the windows and doors to avoid the cold air from seeping into the RV. By adding insulated curtains, one can easily keep the inside of the RV much warmer without using any electricity.
  • Check the humidity levels in the RV. Since the RV will be a warm haven from the bitter weather, the lack of fresh circulating air could potentially be a breeding ground for mold and mildew, leading to musty odors and potential health concerns. Additionally, if humidity levels are high, it could be an all-around uncomfortable trip. The first thing needed is to check the relative humidity levels in the RV by using Eva-Dry’s hygrometer. Then to rid the RV of excess humidity, equip the ride with a mini-dehumidifier like the Eva-Dry 500. Eva-Dry dehumidifiers are eco-friendly, using natural, silica gel crystals that are non-toxic, colorless and odorless. The dehumidifiers absorb humidity silently and operate without electricity or batteries. Simply renew the dehumidifier when the indicator changes color.

Just because the temperatures have dropped, does not mean you cannot take your RV out on the road. By taking the time to prepare your RV for the winter, including equipping your vehicle with an Eva-Dry dehumidifier, you can rest assured you’ll have an enjoyable trip, without excess moisture caused by increased humidity levels.
