Keith A. Roberts's New Book, 'Meaning-Making With Malignancy: A Theologically Trained Sociologist Reflects on Living Meaningfully With Cancer,' Inspires Renewal of Life.

Press Release ( - MINNEAPOLIS - Jul 16, 2018 - Keith A. Roberts, an award-winning teacher and Emeritus Professor of Sociology at Hanover College, has completed his new book, “Meaning-Making with Malignancy: A Theologically Trained Sociologist Reflects on Living Meaningfully with Cancer”:  a profound and life-affirming commentary of one man’s struggle with terminal illness.

Keith shares, “The first few weeks—even the first month—was a foggy blur of trying to figure out which oncologist, which cancer center, what forms of alternative or integrative medicine, and other decisions were navigated. In less than two weeks, I was scheduled for my first chemotherapy treatments at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, just ninety minutes from our home. I would be in a recliner with intravenous tubes pumping poison into my system for four hours every other week. I decided to take my laptop and use that time writing to family and friends about my situation. Very quickly, I found that summarizing my medical update was not enough; in fact, I found it quite boring. I was filled with questions about what all of this means. How do I make sense of what I have been experiencing? So, each entry began with brief updates on my own health and health care; I followed it with reflections or musings on what all of this meant.”

Published by Covenant Books of Murrells Inlet, South Carolina, Keith A. Roberts’s new book is a rousing and unshakably clear-eyed take on life with cancer, as well as a better, mindful, and life-enhancing way of dealing with it.

Far from merely being a commentary on one person’s journey and insights, Professor Roberts’s stirring work extends a brilliant beacon of hope for fellow patients with terminal illnesses, offering a more compassionate and enriching attitude for facing the most devastating of diagnoses.
