Press Release ( - TIJUANA, Mexico - Aug 09, 2016 - The Instituto de Medicina Regenerativa (IMR) from Tijuana Mexico reported today publication of clinical study results in patients with heart failure due to chronic ischemic myopathy that were treated with their own stem cells extracted from fat tissue, as part of the clinical trial organized by US Stem Cell Inc., (previously known as BioHeart) which is registered on the National Institutes of Health database and approved by COFEPRIS, the Mexican equivalent of the FDA.

The study involved extraction of a small amount of fat tissue using a mini-liposuction, purification of stem cells, and administration into the heart using the transendocardial delivery system (MyoCath(®)) in patients who had experienced a previous heart attack. The subjects were then monitored for adverse events, ejection fraction via echocardiogram and six-minute walk test (6MWT) over a period of 6 months.

The average ejection fraction, which measures the heart’s pumping ability, was 29 % before treatment and significantly increased to 35 % at both 3 and 6 months after treatment. Patients walked an average of 349 m at baseline and demonstrated a statistically significant improvement at 3 and 6 months’ post treatment of more than 80 m.

“We are pleased to provide data to the scientific and patient communities that demonstrates that the procedure which we have been performing at the IMR clinic for 6 years is backed by solid, peer-reviewed, scientific publications.” Said Dr. Javier Lopez, CEO of IMR. “While numerous clinics internationally offer stem cell therapy, we have chosen the path of transparency of our procedures and patient’s progress. Our alliances with major universities and research institutions enable us to share our results openly and in a peer-reviewed manner.”

Dr. Juan Jose Parcero, Interventional Cardiologist and Principle Investigator of this trial stated “I am fortunate enough to see my patients getting their life back.  Prior to their treatment, some of my patients were homebound; now they are leading a normal and active life.  This has been the case of the first 4 patients that were treated April 14th, 2010.”

Kristin Comella, Voted Top Stem Cell Influencer of the Academy of Regenerative Practices and first author of the publication stated “From the beginning of the collaboration, Dr. Parcero, who was trained in the injection technique by Dr. Warren Sherman, then at Columbia University, and his team have shown the highest level of professionalism and medical care standards.  It has been a pleasure to work with this team to advance science in a patient population that previously had no treatment options.”
