According to the Farmers Market Coalition, “National Farmers Market Week [August 5-11] is a great opportunity to show the nation how much value these markets bring to their communities.”
The number of farmers markets in the U.S. has skyrocketed since 1996, starting around 2,400 markets and expanding to 8,600 markets as of 2016. This is due to all of the benefits they provide for the local economy, as well as preserving farmland, increasing access to fresh food and supporting healthy communities.
Farmers markets are also a great way to bring local communities together by allowing shoppers to learn more about their local providers and show support by purchasing fresh produce and other goods at reasonable prices.
