Open Access BPO, Philippine Red Cross organize 5th blood drive

Press Release ( - MAKATI CITY, Philippines - Apr 12, 2016 - Teaming up with the Philippine Red Cross (PRC), one of the widest humanitarian networks in the country, Open Access BPO held its fifth annual blood donation campaign. Out of the 37 who expressed their interest, 14 employees were medically cleared to donate blood. The whole-day event was held in the call center’s Makati office on April 7.

These types of activities help spread awareness on health issues while also promoting volunteerism within the organization.

“This partnership (between Open Access BPO and PRC) emphasizes volunteerism. Blood donation is a good form of community service or corporate social responsibility,” Dr. Edmundo Marra from the PRC team said. Dr. Marra spearheaded the blood donation activity.

Furthermore, according to Dr. Marra, blood donation is beneficial not only to recipients but also to donors. He explained that blood loss triggers the creation of new red blood cells, which enhances circulation and energizes the body.

During the event, a total of 6300 mL of blood was extracted. This helps fill the PRC’s need to collect 2,500 to 3,000 blood units per day.

“I’ve been donating blood regularly, but last year, I wasn’t able to participate in Open Access BPO’s blood drive since I was then a new employee. I definitely would join volunteer activities like this in the future, because I want to help those who need medical assistance,” Edmond Enoy, one of the donors, said.

PRC, which currently supplies 50% to 60% of the entire country’s blood needs, will be providing the collected volume to its partner hospitals all over the country. To meet the high demand for blood supply, they also partner with schools and churches. Aside from medical assistance, PRC also organizes nationwide disaster rescue operations, youth leadership programs, and therapeutic counseling.

Alongside the blood donation program, Open Access BPO also invited pharmaceutical company Sanofi, which manufactured Dengvaxia®, the world’s first licensed dengue vaccine. Sanofi conducted an awareness campaign among employees to encourage them to protect themselves against dengue. Dengvaxia®, which was launched in the Philippines just last February, was clinically developed in the country.
