Open-Air Family Fun: How a Local, 5th-Generation, Family-Owned Farm Plans on Supplying a Safe and Fresh Getaway Amidst Pandemic

Press Release ( - HOBART, Ind. - Jun 10, 2020 - Johnson’s Farm Produce has been a community staple since the early 1960s and has been supplying the region’s best home-grown strawberries for over 50 years. What started as a small and humble strawberry farm has now expanded to the largest strawberry, blueberry, raspberry and vegetable UPICK farm in the Midwest.

This particular year, COVID-19 hit and left a surge of devastation in its wake. Financial, medical, emotional, and various other unavoidable burdens have left everyone feeling exhausted, isolated and restless. It’s no doubt that everyone has felt anxious and alone as adaption and adjustments have been made to protect loved ones and those in our community. However, hope, beauty and joy can be found when walking through the greenhouses and open fields on the property. Studies done by the psychology community show that nature-based recreation has a strong potential to improve mental health outcomes in areas of general well-being, resilience, restoration, and cognition, and may also directly decrease symptoms of anxiety, stress, and depression.

Johnson’s has over 300 acres of land that father and son have maintained over the decades. While much of the land is UPICK and produce fields, Johnson’s, in recent years, has expanded to meet a growing need in the community. The fun farm was added to bring people together and to provide a safe and fresh environment for family fun.

Johnson’s provides an experience like no other, especially during this hectic and unsure time for our country. Fresh air, direct exposure to nature, and picking fresh produce while social distancing is one of the most popular ways to show children where their food comes. Though groceries may be running short on toilet paper and sanitizer, the farm has a beautiful abundance of strawberries this year that need to be picked, otherwise, they will be wasted.

Due to the weather, crops have been delayed this year, but the crop looks like one of the best seen in years. The fun farm activities will include a jump pad, obstacle course, straw mountain, goat village, train rides, produce cannons, pedal karts, and more. However, some activities will remain closed until they can safely be reopened. With all the craziness going on, please know Johnson’s is dedicated to the health, safety, and wellbeing of every customer. Everything in Johnson’s power will be done to maintain the CDC disinfecting and social distancing guidelines.
