Roundtable Analytics and AAAEM Partner to Create New Measurement Index for EDs

Press Release (ePRNews.com) - LARKSPUR, Calif. - Mar 26, 2019 - In conjunction with executive administrators of Johns Hopkins University and the AAAEM1, Roundtable Analytics has developed a new method for comparing the Emergency Department (ED) patient population acuity. The AAAEM Acuity Index is a unique blend of critical factors, including the number of ED visits, levels of patient acuity, the rate of EMS arrivals and EMS admissions. The AAAEM Acuity Index is derived from the AAAEM Benchmark Survey data, an annual compilation of key performance metrics of all member Academic Medical Centers that is provided by Roundtable Analytics, Inc.

While hospitals use a Case Mix Index – a relative measure of the average procedural burden of hospital inpatients – for financial reimbursement from insurers, a similar measurement for ED patient acuity has not previously been available. As a result, ED Administrators have struggled to define, measure, and compare the relative acuity of their patient populations. 

The AAAEM Acuity index was introduced at the March 11, 2019 Society of Academic Emergency Medicine’s (SAEM) Annual Retreat in Puerto Rico by Jim Scheulen, Vice President of Administration of Johns Hopkins Medicine; Gai Cole, MBA, MHA, DrPH, Johns Hopkins Medicine; and Nate Holt, MS, MStat, Ph.D., Roundtable Analytics, Inc.
