Seattle-Based Tech Startup Partners With Foster Care Group to Raise Support, Awareness

Press Release ( - SEATTLE - Jan 15, 2018 - A new, locally developed app, Better Finds, is partnering with Olive Crest, a local foster care advocate to raise funds through technology.

A launch campaign for the #giveitupforfosterkids effort was held Saturday, Jan. 13 at the Maple Valley Bar & Grill in Maple Valley, Washington. Representatives from both Olive Crest and Better Finds and State Representative Mark Hargrove (District 47) spoke about the foster care crisis in Washington and how the Better Finds partnership will benefit foster families.

Better Finds co-founder David White wants to see his app used to raise funds and awareness for foster kids and other non-profit organizations. White has been a foster parent for more than five years and sees the dire need of foster care and support in Washington. He cites the statistic that more than 1,600 kids are awaiting foster care placement in Washington.

It’s a great way for people to give to charities even if they don’t have the means to write a check.

Better Finds is an innovative new app that works similarly to Craigslist but where proceeds go to charity. Users download the free app, post photos of items they wish to sell locally, set a price and choose their charity recipient. Others may purchase the items and make a physical exchange with the seller, but the buyer pays through the app.

The proceeds then go to the charity of the seller’s choice. The seller receives a tax-donation receipt. In essence, Olive Crest may not need the couch in your garage but would benefit by receiving the cash generated by the sale of that couch.

“It’s a great way for people to give to charities even if they don’t have the means to write a check,” said White. “Selling your no-longer-used items and giving the proceeds to your charity of choice benefits everyone. You gain space in your home, you give to a cause you care about and the buyer receives a great deal on something they want. It’s a win-win-win situation,” he said.

Olive Crest works to find safe homes and support for foster kids in Washington. Since 1973, Olive Crest has transformed the lives of more than 100,000 abused, neglected and at-risk children and their families.

“We are very encouraged by the vision Better Finds has and very excited about the work they are doing to help raise awareness for foster care,” said Jeff Judy, executive director at Olive Crest.
