SNEAK – The UK's biggest weekly student house music night

Press Release ( - LONDON - May 20, 2016 - An undebatable factor in the rise of house music in recent years, has been the way that young people react, love and pick up the genre. That’s why today I’m looking at SNEAK, the UK’s biggest weekly student house club-night.

When you think of university club-nights, you think of cotton-eye Joe and wonderwall badly mixed into Avici and Flo-Rida by a 50year old DJ stalwart. Sweaty Ralph Lauren polo shirt wearing lads chugging vodka red-bulls and girls crying in the toilet. This was my university experience at least, but recently the game is changing.

In 2014, noticing a change in the way that young people were clubbing. London’s biggest student nightlife operator, Wicked Student Nights, teamed up with top promoters, with experience in Boiler Room Cape Town & Pukka Up Ibiza, and created a flag-ship weekly student house night in London. SNEAK. And with 100 nights under it’s belt, big names like Danny Howard and DJ SKT playing and sold out nights most week. I’m having a look, at the biggest weekly student house club-night in the UK tonight.

Stationed at the now iconic XOYO in Shoreditch, boasting one of the top sound-systems in the capital. SNEAK is over two floors, and still has many of the things you’d normally associate with a student night. Drinks are cheap, floors get sticky, guests arrive fashionably late in droves and flasks of Glen’s Vodka and buckfast are confiscated in the queue as people go in.

But once in the door, the change is evident: smoky, dark, red lights guide you to the stairwell and thumping beats pulsate from downstairs. It’s intimidating, and exciting. The crowd is diverse, cool and fashionable. On the dance-floor, student throw shapes and duck in time with the music.

This month’s guest DJ’s come from the most engaging labels London has spawned in recent years, I see Jess Bays, Jay Forster and Theo Wainhouse on the list for the next few nights. The sets unleash a fair share of dancefloor weapons, and vary between sets, often edging slightly away from the dancefloor, towards hazier, more ethereal spaces. Always the music maintains a high standard, the product of organizers Jason Mallia and V Caires who can often be found behind the cash desk with headphones in. Or behind the decks checking out the music. It’s clear that House music is their passion.

SNEAK also has a strong 100+ hour Mixcloud channel (Mixcloud – @SNEAKUK) and filters in music from the best DJ societies emerging from London universities. When I was there, it was clear that the buzz that comes from these societies is a big factor in the night. You’ve got new talent, dropping new beats and getting big love from their friends and the following acts. They’re followed up by the big name house act, whose tunes always get respect from the crowd that’s built up in previous sets.

As the beat drops for the final hour of the night, the crowd is obviously not letting up, I dive off into the night, sweaty, drunk and with a grin on my face all the way home. It’s obvious that SNEAK is about more than just supplying House music to the student crowds in London. It’s about handing over the crown, to the next generation of house music.

SNEAK is moving further afield, already hosting a boat party in the dam as part of Spring Break Amsterdam 2016. And this summer in London, they are collaborating on Pier Pressure Boat Parties. SNEAK is on Tuesdays throughout UK student term times at XOYO.
