Teams of Students and Residents Compete for Opportunity to Travel Internationally to Help Underserved Patients

Press Release ( - Chicago, IL - Jan 11, 2017 - The 2017 “Med Plus Advantage Global Health Challenge” contest has been launched and is now accepting essay submissions. Complete details can be found at

The “Med Plus Advantage Global Health Challenge” contest was created by AMA Insurance’s Med Plus Advantage program and allows the winning team members to experience firsthand the work of Timmy Global Health.

Teams of 2-5 pre-med, medical students and/or residents as well as students in allied health fields are invited to enter by answering the contest question, in 500 words or less. Up to ten finalists will then be selected to create a video that will be placed on the contest’s site, and one team will be selected by a panel of judges. The winning team will be announced in the spring of 2017.

The winning team of the essay and video contest will have an opportunity to work alongside Timmy Global Health (TGH) in Ecuador, Guatemala or the Dominican Republic to provide high quality health services to underserved populations.

“Global health experiences offer aspiring medical professionals the opportunity to grow personally and professionally. They foster a lifelong passion for service to the neediest populations, both at home and abroad, and they enable a deeper understanding of the social determinants of health. Working in a low-resource setting inspires humility, resourcefulness, creativity and attention to a patient’s life circumstances—all of which strengthens the skills of future health care providers,” says Timmy Global Health’s new Executive Director, Kristina Graff. “The Med Plus Advantage Global Health Challenge is anchored in the values of service, cross-cultural engagement and compassion. With this program AMA Insurance is encouraging tomorrow’s leaders in medicine.”

The nationwide contest is sponsored by AMA Insurance Agency, Inc. The “Med Plus Advantage Global Health Challenge” winning team will “collaborate directly with Timmy Global Health as they serve those too often underserved,” says Brian Farmer of AMA Insurance. “They’ll learn about the problems underserved patients face. They’ll analyze and think through strategies to solve those challenges. And alongside Timmy, they will act. ”

This year, Med Plus Advantage is announcing a new product, International Medical Insurance, in conjunction with the contest.  To learn more about the coverage for allied health students, medical students, residents, and their families visit
