Baton Rouge native and community activist, Antoine Pierce, has come out against Sen. Bill Cassidy’s recent healthcare bill, saying the Republican-backed bill doesn’t help most Louisianans and only caters to the insurance industry.
Pierce is the only Democrat to formally declare he is running for the 2020 U.S. Senate seat, currently held by Republican incumbent, Bill Cassidy. Earlier this summer, Cassidy introduced a healthcare bill, called – Lower Healthcare Cost Act – that claims to lower the cost of prescription drugs and protect patients from unexpected medical bills.
Pierce says when you look closely at the bill, it doesn’t go far enough to help Louisianans who can’t even afford their healthcare.
“Lower Healthcare Costs Act” is a great name, but it doesn’t provide any relief to patients who have trouble paying for their medical bills,” said Pierce. “Warning patients of upcoming costs is not exactly a path that will lead to Lower Health Care Costs. The problem for most patients isn’t necessarily how much medical services cost. The problem is that most Americans couldn’t afford the services no matter how much they cost. Where’s the relief for patients who cannot afford to pay for healthcare? This Health Care Cost legislation is just a publicity stunt by our US Senator to try to pretend he is on the side of the poor and Middle Class.”
Pierce believes that no citizen of the richest country in the world should die because they cannot afford healthcare coverage or their prescription medication. Pierce supports Universal Healthcare/Medicare For All with an option that allows the insured to retain their private/employer provided insurance if they want to.
His support for healthcare coverage as a right and his plan for tax cuts for the lower and middle class will improve the quality of life for Louisianans who cannot afford to pay the rising costs for healthcare and prescription drugs. He grew up in a large lower middle class family, giving him a real life perspective of the challenges Louisiana voters face on a daily basis. This personal experience and upbringing inspired him to give back to the community where he grew up.
Christian Swing Vote up for Grabs in Louisiana
The Democratic candidate for the US Senate believes he can win over the 84 percent of adults who identify themselves as Christian and defeat Cassidy. Pierce says his Christian values will play a pivotal role in his upcoming run for the U.S. Senate.
“The Trump Republican doesn’t own the Christian vote,” said Pierce. “I’m a Christian – and there are also a lot of Christian Democrats who belong to my church. We all share the values that our faith has given to us. I want to bring our Christian values to Washington and serve my state in the US Senate.”
According to a recent Pew Research Center poll, more than half – 43 percent of Louisianas– identify themselves as Democrats. The same study showed roughly 90 percent of all Louisiana adults say religion is important or very important to them.
Pierce has an extensive career that spans the nonprofit, public and private sectors. He’s a radio talk show host, delegate for the Urban Congress on African American Boys in Baton Rouge, Fellow on the Fifth Cohort of the Urban Leadership Development Initiative, and founder of the Better Boys Initiative – a nonprofit organization that uses the arts to develop character and self esteem among underserved youth throughout Baton Rouge.
He served on Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome’s transition subcommittee for the Office of Community Development, and is an appointee of Governor John Bel Edwards’ advisory board for Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention. He graduated from Louisiana State University with a B.S. in Child and Family Studies, and is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Public Administration with a concentration in Public Policy.
