Winter Film Awards & Aftab Committee present: Film, Identity and Space: Indie Iranian Films

Press Release ( - NEW YORK - Feb 02, 2017 - Winter Film Awards and the Aftab Committee are proud to present Film, Identity and Space: Indie Iranian Films, a panel discussion moderated by Lila Nazemian with panelists, Rodin Hamidi, Shoja Azari, and Ghasem Ebrahimian.

In this discussion, we will hear about the experiences of  Iranian-American filmmakers and their thoughts on indie Iranian films. The panel will be proceeded by a screening of three short films from Iran; Meeting with the Leaf by Fazlollah Tari, Live with Me by Amirhossein Kotobzadeh and Dancing in Water by Zahra Jafari.

This free event is part of the 2017 Winter Film Awards Indie Film Festival and will be held on February 28 2017 from 6:00 PM – 7:30 PM at Cinema Village, 22 East 22nd Street, New York NY 10003.  Attendees should register at


Iranian-born Lila Nazemian is a New York-based curator who works in the United States with Tehran-based artists. She is the US Projects Director of CultuRunners.

Ghasem Ebrahimian is an award winning filmmaker from Iran who came to the US in 1974. His video installations have been shown in museums and galleries around the world.

Rodin Hamidi is an independent Cinematographer, Director and Fine Art photographer based in New York City.

Shoja Azari is an Iranian-born visual artist and filmmaker based in New York City, known for Women Without Men, Windows and K based on 3 of Franz Kafka’s short stories.


The Aftab Committee for Iranian-American Artists is a leading voice and platform for Iranian-American artists and art. Our goal is disseminate contemporary Iranian-American art with diverse audiences by empowering Iranian-American artists. We enhance public understanding and appreciation of Iranian-American art through acquisition, exhibitions, art & culture events, and education. Founded in May of 2014, The Aftab Committee is a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering Iranian-American artists and art. The rapidly growing Winter Film Awards Indie Film Festival (, now in its sixth year, is a dynamic and exciting event in the heart of the City.  Winter Film Awards showcases films from emerging filmmakers from around the world in all genres with a special emphasis on highlighting the work of women and minority filmmakers.  The Festival runs February 23-March 4 2017 in New York City.

Among the 88 Official Selections to be screened at Cinema Village in the heart of Greenwich Village (22 East 12th Street, New York, NY 10003), is a diverse mixture of 11 Animated films, 8 Documentaries, 11 Feature narratives, 10 Horror films, 12 Music Videos, 24 Narrative shorts and 7 Web series, including 12 student films and 33 first-time filmmakers.  Filmmakers come from 30 countries; 42% of the films were created by women, 45% were created by people of color.  Visit for schedules, tickets and details!
