Press Release (ePRNews.com) - RISHIKESH, India - Nov 19, 2016 - Ancient History of Yoga

For ages, yoga has been practiced in different parts of the world. There have been different yoga masters in the various countries, who deeply involved themselves in yoga and later taught it to others. India is one such country where yoga is practiced deeply and why so because it has been the hub of yoga. Yoga began in India and its first master is said to be Lord Shiva known as ‘adi yogi’ or ‘adi-guru.’ He is said to be the first teacher who started the practice of yoga and gave its knowledge to his first disciples namely Matsyendranath and Gorakshnath, who further taught it to the general public.

Passing Yoga through Generations

After getting complete knowledge of yoga from ‘adi yogi,’ Matsyendranath and Gorakshnath further passed on their knowledge by teaching yoga to ancient sages and saints. These sages and saints again passed it on to the next generation that included the likes of Swami Ramakrishna, Adi Shankaracharya, Swami Kuvalayananda andSwami Sivananda Saraswati.

Places from where Yoga spread across the World

India has been the hub of yoga, and it spread out from various cities which are today considered as yoga centers. Those cities include Rishikesh, Dharamshala, Mysore, Kerala and Goa (the last two are states). Importance of Rishikesh in Yoga

Rishikesh is the same city from where the concept of International Yoga Festival first came up in 1999. It is being celebrated across the world since 2015 every year.
