5 Reasons You’ve Got A Chronic Cough

If you feel like you’ve been coughing for a long time, and you’ve confirmed that it’s not Coronavirus, then you might start wondering what the problem is. Although getting sick from time to time is a part of life, a lingering cough can be a nuisance.

Whether you are hacking violently, or it’s just a light and persistent cough, there’s likely a reason behind it that’s resulting in it not going away. Take a look at some of the most common reasons why you may have a chronic cough.

Poor Air Quality

The quality of air that you breathe plays a huge role in how healthy your lungs are. The truth is that you may be breathing in dirtier air than you realize. For example, if you have an air conditioner, it’s important that you regularly clean the filters and ducts.

Otherwise, a dirty HVAC system could be negatively impacting your breathing.

Consider cleaning out your HVAC system, and you may be surprised that your cough goes away immediately.

The Flu

In some cases, you may just have a bad case of the flu. Some forms of flu are known to last as long as three weeks. The best way to know is to pay attention to what other symptoms accompany your cough.

For example, if you also have a sore throat, a headache, and a fever, then it’s likely the flu. Again, it’s important to be tested for Coronavirus any time you have a respiratory issue. However, if that has been ruled out, then you’re likely dealing with something else.

Bronchitis

A cough that sounds like a bark is likely a case of Bronchitis. Bronchitis is when your bronchial tubes are inflamed and cause significant amounts of phlegm. It’s important that you’re treated by a doctor for Bronchitis since it can develop into something more serious. In some cases, you may require antibiotics to clear up the problem.

Allergies

In some cases, people rule out the possibility of an allergy because they’ve never been allergic to anything before. However, the truth is that you can develop allergies as your life progresses.

Something that never caused you problems before can suddenly start making your eyes water and bring on a cough. You should consider taking an allergy test with your doctor to determine whether something may be irritating your lungs that you’re allergic to.

Asthma

Asthma is frequently a cause of chronic coughs. Asthma happens when your airways are swollen, and your breathing becomes difficult. The result is a dry cough that typically happens either early in the morning or late at night, or when exerting energy.

If asthma is determined as the reason for your chronic cough, then you will need to be given a treatment that contains steroids. This treatment won’t only treat your current symptoms but also prevent them from happening in the future.
