Nokia Sets Ambitious Goal to Achieve Net Zero Emissions by 2040
Feb 27, 2024: Nokia has announced its commitment to achieving net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040, a decade ahead of its previous target and ahead of the Paris Agreement’s goal of net zero by 2050.
Under the leadership of Pekka Lundmark, President and CEO of Nokia, the company has pledged to intensify its efforts to reduce emissions across its operations. This commitment builds on Nokia’s existing target to halve its greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 from a 2019 baseline.
Lundmark emphasized Nokia’s dedication to sustainability, stating, “Our new emission reduction targets show that net zero is a business priority for Nokia.” He highlighted the company’s role in helping telecom customers decarbonize and its commitment to developing energy-efficient solutions across various networks.
Nokia, which was among the first telecommunications vendors to have its 2030 Science Based Target validated, has recalibrated its near-term targets in line with a 1.5°C warming scenario. This includes reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 50% across its value chain by 2030.
To ensure alignment with climate science, Nokia has submitted its net-zero commitment to the Science Based Targets initiative. The company has outlined key strategies in its net-zero pathway, including product design innovation, transitioning to renewable electricity, improving energy and material efficiency, and exploring carbon removal solutions.
In addition to its operational initiatives, Nokia is addressing emissions from its marine fleet, investing in more efficient vessels and exploring the use of biofuels to reduce emissions. As Nokia accelerates its efforts towards sustainability, it reaffirms its commitment to environmental stewardship and climate action.
