SAN FRANCISCO - Sep 18, 2025 (UTC) - Numeral, the AI-powered sales tax compliance platform, announced a $35 million Series B funding round led by Mayfield, with participation from Benchmark, Uncork Capital, Y Combinator, and Mantis. The announcement follows a year of rapid growth for Numeral, which has processed over $5 billion in transaction volume, filed 150,000 sales tax returns, and achieved 3.5x year-over-year revenue growth.
The Series B brings Numeral’s total funding to $57 million, building on earlier rounds including a $4 million seed from Y Combinator and Uncork Capital and an $18 million Series A led by Benchmark Capital in March 2025. The funding will fuel continued product innovation, global expansion, and AI-driven automation capabilities as the company scales its platform that manages the entire sales tax lifecycle from nexus detection and state registration to filing, remittance, and exemption certificate management.
Founded in early 2023 by Sam Ross, CEO, and Matt DuVall, CTO (engineer behind Stripe and Notion), Numeral now serves over 2,000 e-commerce and SaaS brands, including Ridge, Eight Sleep, Graza, Grüns, and Manus. The company supports compliance across 60+ countries with AI workflows and expert-backed service, addressing one of the most complex compliance issues facing modern businesses with over 11,000 tax jurisdictions in the U.S. alone, each with its own rules, deadlines, and definitions.
“Numeral is transforming one of the most painful and error-prone functions in finance—sales tax compliance—by putting it on autopilot,” said Sri Pangulur, Partner at Mayfield. “Their AI-first platform eliminates the complexity of managing thousands of constantly shifting tax jurisdictions, enabling modern e-commerce and SaaS businesses to scale with confidence. We’re proud to lead their Series B and back their mission to become the intelligent system of record for global sales tax.”
“As operators, we lived the pain of sales tax firsthand: hours lost, filings missed, and constant second-guessing,” said Sam Ross, co-founder and CEO of Numeral. “We built Numeral to eliminate that friction entirely. This funding allows us to keep pushing the boundaries of what automation can do, so finance teams can focus on driving the business forward, not deciphering tax codes.”
The startup emerged from Ross’s personal experience running e-commerce brands while traveling globally, where he encountered the complexity of sales tax compliance following the 2018 Supreme Court ruling that required businesses to collect taxes in jurisdictions where their customers are located, even without physical presence. Ross was encouraged by Y Combinator partner Gustaf Alstromer, his former boss at Airbnb, to build a startup automating every aspect of sales tax management.
Numeral’s AI-driven platform addresses the constant regulatory churn that forces companies to spend tens of thousands of dollars annually on compliance tools, audits, and tax specialists. The company’s AI is aware of thousands of complex tax laws, including nuanced regulations like New York’s bagel tax rule where a whole bagel is tax exempt but becomes taxable when cut in half as it’s considered ready to eat. The platform offers an error-free filing guarantee, white glove support, and simple pricing while handling tax-related mail, filing, and payments on behalf of clients.
“Kudos to the Numeral team. They’ve built an incredible platform and keep Ridge compliant across the country. It’s been a breath of fresh air, and I can’t believe we didn’t migrate sooner,” said Avi Golan, CFO of Ridge.
The funding comes as the sales tax automation market faces increasing competition from startups including Anrok and Zamp, as well as 26-year-old incumbent Avalara, which is expected to go public later this year. Ross differentiates Numeral through its international offering, with the company filing taxes in markets like Tanzania and Kenya where businesses traditionally had to use CPA firms.
