Nxtra Partners with Ampln and Amplus Energy to Procure 140,208 MWh Renewable Energy for Data Centers

Press Release (ePRNews.com) - Feb 14, 2024 - Nxtra by Airtel, a leading data center company in India, has announced a significant power-wheeling agreement with Ampln and Amplus Energy to secure an additional 140,208 MWh of renewable energy. This initiative is poised to reinforce Nxtra’s ongoing commitment to reduce its carbon footprint through renewable energy sources annually by approximately 99,547 tCO2e.

Under the agreement, AmpIn Energy and Amplus Energy will establish captive solar and wind power plants, with capacities of 48 MWdc and 24.3 MW, respectively, to supply renewable energy to Nxtra’s data centers in Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, and Odisha. These 25-year agreements align with Nxtra’s ambitious goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2031, further solidifying its position as India’s largest chain of green data centers.

This procurement of renewable energy complements Nxtra’s comprehensive strategy to reduce absolute scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions across its operations by 100% by FY2031. In addition to accelerating the adoption of green energy, Nxtra has implemented energy-efficient infrastructure and sustainable business practices, reflecting its commitment to environmental stewardship.

Ashish Arora, CEO of Nxtra by Airtel, expressed, “These new partnerships underscore our dedication to lead India’s green data center sector and fulfill our pledge to achieve net-zero emissions by 2031. The addition of clean energy supply will elevate our renewable energy share to approximately 70% in the overall energy mix for our core data centers.”

The breakdown of the agreement includes:

Tamil Nadu: Partnership with Amplus Energy for a 24.3 MW Wind + 28 MWdc Solar power plant, resulting in 109,798 MWh renewable energy supply and approximately 77,957 tCO2e annual carbon reduction.

Uttar Pradesh: Collaboration with AmpIn Energy Transition for a 12 MWdc Solar power plant, yielding 17,880 MWh renewable energy and around 12,694 tCO2e annual carbon reduction.

Odisha: Partnership with AmpIn Energy Transition for an 8 MWdc Solar power plant, providing 12,530 MWh renewable energy and approximately 8,896 tCO2e annual carbon reduction.

Nxtra by Airtel, boasting the largest network of data centers in India with 12 large and 120 edge data centers nationwide, is poised to invest over Rs 5000 crores in the coming years to expand its capacity by 2X to over 400 MW and build six new hyperscale data centers across key metro cities in India.
