4 Things Your Business Can do to Reduce Your Environmental Impact

We live in an age where it’s more important than ever to recognize the impact we play on the environment. Besides carrying this responsibility in your personal life, it’s also up to your business to do its part as much as possible. If you’re looking for some practical ways to reduce your overall environmental impact, here are some useful ways for you to get started.

Choose Sustainable Materials and Packaging

Chances are your business produces its fair share of waste. Depending on what type of business you have, you may contribute a more significant amount than others.  The first place to start with reducing your waste is to choose sustainable materials and products, and consider the kind of packaging to use.

Use eco-friendly materials and encourage your employees to recycle regularly. While you’re at it, you may want to opt for eliminating the use of paper altogether at your business. Many businesses choose to go this route and find that it can make a significant difference in their overall waste production.

Be More Energy Efficient

Not only does being more energy efficient mean lowering your bills, it also means reducing your carbon footprint. There are several different ways that you can make your business more energy efficient, depending on what kind of business you run. For example, in a warehouse you may want to opt for a different kind of lighting, whereas in an office you may want to consider updating your equipment for more energy efficient ones.

Ideally, you should conduct an energy audit to identify where you’re consuming the most energy, and how you can make improvements. By constantly revisiting your consumption and looking for solutions, the more you can reduce your environmental impact over time.

Cut Back on Water Consumption

Some businesses rely on water more than others. However, every business relies on water in some way or another .  Whether it’s in your employee bathroom, or the break room sink, look for ways to minimize the amount of water that your business consumes.

From fixing links, to installing low flow faucets and toilets, look for water saving strategies you can implement.  While you’re at it, encourage your employees to do their part by not leaving the water running, and not being wasteful. The more everyone can do their part in your business, the better.

Encourage Carpooling

One of the biggest contributors to the destruction of the planet is transportation. And while you may not always be able to avoid relying on a car, you can reduce the amount that you use one. Encourage your employees to carpool to reduce the amount of cars on the road. While you’re at it, you may also want to encourage using public transportation. Some businesses even go as far as providing transportation passes for their employees to encourage eco-conscious commuting.
