5 Signs Your Roof Needs Replacing

5 Signs Your Roof Needs Replacing

There are plenty of things that can go wrong in your home, from burst pipes to rotten floorboards, all of which need to be repaired as soon as possible. Your roof is just one area of your home that requires your attention and it’s easy to forget about it because it’s not right there in front of you. Make sure you’re checking your roof for damage regularly, and keep an eye out for these 5 signs that it needs repair or replacing.

1.    Leaks

Leaks can come from pipes or lose faucets, but if you notice water dripping from your bedroom ceiling or running down the walls, this could also be an indication that your roof is damaged. Torn lining or lose, cracked and missing shingles could be the reasons your roof is leaking. You can try to see the damage from a distant vantage point out on the street, but it’s better to call in an expert roofer to inspect it. They will be able to determine whether it just needs some repair work, or if you need a roof replacement.

2.    High Energy Bills

Another indication your roof might be damaged is an increase in your energy bills. Although other things could be contributing, such as poor insulation or broken window seals, if you do notice your payments rising it’s worth checking out the roof. Again, broken shingles or other tears and holes could be the reason you’re losing so much heat.

3.    Sagging Roof

If you want to check whether your roof is sagging, cross the street from your property so you can get a good look at it. If it appears to be dipping in the middle, then you are dealing with a sagging roof. This is quite a significant issue with the structure of your roof, and you must get it fixed as soon as possible. Otherwise, your roof might collapse and put pressure on the supporting walls of the house. You will likely need to have a new roof put on to resolve the issue.

4.    Damp

If you’re seeing signs of damp on the ceiling or bubbling wallpaper, this could be because your roof is damaged. Again, damp could be the result of several issues in your property, but it’s worth checking the roof for good measure. Other indications that you have damp in your home include a musty smell, mold on the walls, and excessive condensation on your windows.

5.    Outside Light Visible from Inside the Attic

If you’re in your attic space and can see patches or streams of light coming from outside, your roof requires repair. It will either be due to ripped or worn-out lining, or a broken shingle. You will need to hire the help of an expert roofer to find the cause of the issue and repair it.

If you have noticed any of these signs that your roof is damaged, don’t wait to call for help. Leaving things for too long will only lead to bigger (and more expensive) problems.
