Wegman adds: “GEM Mortgage has grown significantly since the recession and recently, the bulk of GEM’s business has been roughly 75 percent purchase transactions, with another 25 percent in the refinance market”.

Of the purchases — and, it depends on the market area — approximately 35 percent were distressed sales. Though the real estate market has improved, prices for home sales have maintained a level that still allows people to qualify for a mortgage and own a home. GEM is seeing a lot of people taking advantage of that situation. Investment properties are also fairing better even with the need for adherence to new guidelines issued by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.
