Singtel Introduces World’s First App-Based Network Slicing Technology
Feb 23, 2024: Singtel, in collaboration with Ericsson and Samsung, has made a groundbreaking announcement today regarding the world’s first live implementation of app-based network slicing. This pioneering technology empowers application owners to activate a dedicated slice of Singtel’s 5G network, enhancing the performance of their apps and enriching user experiences in unprecedented ways.
Unlike previous network slicing technologies that differentiated network experiences based on subscriber lines, Singtel’s advanced implementation allows app owners to tailor network slices to specific applications. Tested during the live streaming of the recent Australian Open using Singtel’s CAST application, this technology, named User Equipment Route Selection Policy (URSP) with Application Detection Control (ADC), holds immense potential for various use cases, particularly benefiting apps requiring higher data performance.
Mr. Tay Yeow Lian, Managing Director, Networks, Singtel Singapore, emphasized the significance of this advancement, stating, “With these tailored 5G network slices, we’re unlocking a new pathway for app owners to deliver enhanced user experiences. As data consumption and processing soar with the prevalence of 4K video and artificial intelligence, demands on our telco networks will rise, putting a strain on app performance.”
Samsung, as one of the first device manufacturers to configure URSP for its Galaxy S24 Ultra, plans to extend this rollout to other devices. Mr. Dennis Jang, President of Samsung Electronics Singapore, highlighted the company’s focus on user empowerment and seamless connectivity, stating, “Our mission is straightforward: to offer a user experience that’s seamless, dependable, and responsive.”
This milestone builds on Singtel’s previous advancements in network slicing, including boosting its CAST app during major events like the Grand Prix Season Singapore and the FIFA World Cup Qatar, and implementing Priority-Admission Control during Singapore’s National Day Parade in 2023.
Singtel’s continuous innovation in network slicing reaffirms its commitment to delivering unparalleled connectivity and user experiences, setting new standards for the telecommunications industry worldwide.
