Xiaomi India Partners with SAAHAS for a 3-Year Initiative to Combat Ocean-Bound Plastics and Enhance Waste Management in Udupi District
Feb 03, 2024: Xiaomi, the leading Smartphone X AIoT brand in the country, has joined forces with NGO SAAHAS to launch a three-year program aimed at preventing ocean-bound plastics and improving waste management practices in Udupi district. This comprehensive initiative will cover 12 Gram Panchayats in Kundapura and Baindoor taluks, focusing on sustainable waste practices and marine conservation.
The program, driven by Xiaomi India’s commitment to social responsibility, seeks to divert approximately 2300 kgs of dry waste daily from landfills and water sources, effectively contributing to carbon emissions reduction and mitigating the impact on climate change. The initiative encompasses various activities, including efficient waste collection, community-led cleanups, river protection through the installation of trash barriers, engagement with the fishing community, and the improvement of Solid Waste Management facilities.
India’s growing population, coupled with urban development and increased tourism, has led to a significant accumulation of plastic waste, posing a severe threat to coastal ecosystems. Xiaomi India aims to address this critical issue by advocating for effective waste management practices and curbing the menace of ocean-bound plastics. The initiative aligns with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly those related to combating plastic pollution and climate change.
Mr. Muralikrishnan B, President at Xiaomi India, expressed the company’s commitment to contributing to societal well-being through meaningful initiatives. Recognizing the importance of coastal ecosystems, Xiaomi India aims to create awareness and encourage actions that safeguard marine ecosystems, fostering a more sustainable coexistence for current and future generations.
Mr. Mahesh Kumar, Director Programs at SAAHAS, expressed excitement about collaborating with Xiaomi India to address environmental challenges in Udupi district. The partnership will actively implement sustainable waste practices, community-led cleanups, and the protection of vital river ecosystems, contributing significantly to the global fight against plastic pollution and climate change.
The program’s impact is expected to extend beyond waste reduction, enhancing community awareness around blue flag beaches and supporting efforts to protect these shores from plastic pollution, ensuring the sustainability of the marine ecosystem. Xiaomi remains committed to creating a positive impact on society and the environment, continuing to innovate and collaborate with relevant stakeholders for the well-being of the communities it serves.
