Jan 02, 2024 Mark

Madhya Pradesh, India , Jan 02, 2024: The Madhya Pradesh government is set to transform the tourism landscape in 2024 with a dynamic strategy aimed at infusing vibrancy and diversity into the sector. The plan, led by Principal Secretary Tourism Sheo Shekhar Shukla, envisions a holistic, inclusive, sustainable, eco-friendly, and adventure-packed experience for tourists.

Cruise tourism, all women rides, safety of women, wellness and rural vacations will be an integral part of the 2024 trajectory.

“We designed a multi-pronged strategy for tourism in 2023.  In 2024, the plan is to make it more holistic, inclusive, sustainable, eco-friendly and adventure packed,” says Principal Secretary Tourism Sheo Shekhar Shukla.

Cruise Tourism Set to Sail to New Horizons

Cruise tourism is a highlight of Madhya Pradesh’s 2024 tourism trajectory. A major attraction is the proposed 130 km inter-state cruise on the Narmada River, connecting the Statue of Oneness in Omkareshwar to the Statue of Unity in Gujarat. Floating jetties are already in progress for this ambitious project, which promises a unique blend of scenic river views and rural experiences.

Additional cruise projects include linking the Rajhat Dam near Chanderi to Deogarh in Uttar Pradesh, offering long-distance intra-state cruises. Routes such as Miakal Resort to Tindini, Dharaji to Sailani Tapu, and Sanjit village to the tent city of Gandhi Sagar are set to enhance the cruise experience, with the Tawa-Madhai cruise getting a facelift.

Exploring New Trails and Adventure

Madhya Pradesh aims to boost adventure tourism by identifying and developing new trekking trails in the buffer zones of National Parks/Sanctuaries. The tourism department plans to promote the state through biking trails, car rallies, and an all-women seven-day biking event named “Queens on the Wheel,” scheduled for February 2024. This event will take riders on an adventurous journey from Bhopal to Orcha, passing through scenic locations.

 Catalyzing Connectivity and Wellness Retreats

To improve connectivity between destinations, the tourism department is considering reintroducing small aircraft under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP). The year 2024 will also witness the introduction of wellness vacations, offering a mix of yoga, meditation, and creative experiences. Twelve retreats are planned for the first year, with the number increasing to 24 and 36 in subsequent years.

“Wellness vacations offers much beyond diet and physical nurturing. The retreats will have a number of creative offerings.  I am confident that the endeavor will spiral the tourist graph of the state,” says Shukla.

Offbeat Destinations and Rural Tourism Expansion

Madhya Pradesh plans to connect at least 10 unexplored destinations to mainstream tourism in 2024. Emphasis will be on enhancing connectivity and infrastructure development, with the introduction of glamping sites and immersive experiences around these destinations. The number of home stays is expected to exceed 500, with a focus on innovative village life experiences in sync with rural life.

Ensuring safety for women remains a priority, with initiatives to skill women in hospitality-related job roles. The tourism board has trained over 4000 women, with plans to absorb more into the hotel and travel industry in 2024.

Reflecting on 2023’s Success

The year 2023 witnessed a remarkable upswing in Madhya Pradesh tourism after the challenges posed by the pandemic. Introduction of new circuits, festivals, tent cities at offbeat destinations, and rural experiences contributed to the sector’s revival. Festivals like Kuno and Chanderi received positive feedback, while initiatives like Mandu and the Gandhi Sagar Floating Festival attracted visitors, including the establishment of ultra-luxurious tent cities around these destinations. Principal Secretary Sheo Shekhar Shukla highlights the success of connecting tourism with culture and wildlife, setting the stage for a promising 2024.
